Marof winery has put the north eastern Slovenian region of Goricko on the map of wine excellence following a century – long standstill. The Marof estate succeeded in connecting the thread to its noble past in September of 2009, when the new wine cellar was opened next to the renovated mansion. The vineyards are cultivated organic, in the wine cellar we swear by traditional procedures and natural processes with minimal interference only when absolutely necessary. We firmly belive that great wines are a product of culture and nature, not science.

Uros Valcl from the Marof winery is a winemaker who follows no standards. He is a quality fanatic in every respect, producing dry, expressive wines with plenty of terroir. In the north-east, close to the border with Styria, stands the Marof winery in Mackovci.

The 1.95-metre tall former professional basketball player said goodbye to his sporting career at the age of 20 and joined his parents at the wine business. Since then, Uros has devoted himself to viticulture with the same ambition and wants to reach the same heights as he did in sport. The ambitious winemaker sometimes spends nights at the winery when it comes to trying out or implementing something new. After all, he aims to produce one of the best wines in the world. His Sauvignon Blanc from the Breg vineyard is reminiscent of a Pouilly Fumé from the Loire and has an incredible saltiness. I don't want fresh, fruity white wines, but dry wines with depth. The wines grow on quartz rock and have a fine flinty note. His red wines have already won numerous international awards and are among the best in the country.
